Anthurium care: look after the leaves as well as the flowers

A practical Anthurium andraeanum guide to indirect light, warm conditions, moisture checks and observing the plant after its blooms fade.

Plant covered: Anthurium andraeanum.

A flowering anthurium is often bought for its colour, but the next stage of care belongs to the entire plant. When an older bloom changes, compare the leaves and growing conditions before assuming the plant needs a rescue. This guide covers Anthurium andraeanum, not every foliage anthurium sold to collectors.

Choose warmth and indirect light

Bright, indirect light, warmth and humid air suit this anthurium. Keep it out of harsh direct sun and away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes. A bloom arranged at the centre of a table may look beautiful while receiving very little light; choose the position for continued growth.

Keep drainage part of watering

Use a moist, well-drained potting medium. Check whether the upper inch has dried before the next watering, then consider the rest of the container too. Let runoff escape. If the pot remains heavy and wet, an old flower fading is not a reason to give it another drink.

Separate flower changes from leaf changes

Photograph the coloured spathe, which is a modified leaf, separately from the true leafy growth. Record whether the newest leaves are changing as well. Before adding feed, review what you have already used and follow its label. Avoid making a series of changes simply to reproduce the nursery display.

Your next useful check

Make one note about the bloom and another about new foliage. Add the moisture result and recent position changes. The next comparison can show whether only an older bloom changed or the wider plant needs closer attention.

If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.

Care reference

The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Flamingo flower profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
