Plant covered: Nephrolepis exaltata.
Boston fern is a different proposition from a drought-tolerant desk succulent. Its many fronds reward a routine where you can reach and inspect the growing pot easily. Before hanging it high above a window, make sure its placement will let you notice drying medium before the next convenient watering day.
Choose indirect light and humid conditions
Bright, indirect light, warmth and high humidity suit this fern. A kitchen or bathroom may help only if the light and other conditions are suitable too. Leave room for the fronds to spread, and avoid a position where a dry air stream continually blows through them.
Avoid drying the root ball completely
Keep the soil moist with drainage; Boston fern should not be left to dry out completely. Check frequently enough to learn how quickly its basket dries in your home. Moisture still needs an escape route: standing runoff at the base is different from a consistently moist growing medium.
Look closely before treating brown dots
Boston fern produces patterned brown-to-black spore structures on leaf undersides. These can be mistaken for pests. Look at their distribution and compare them with the reference before applying a treatment. A dry frond tip is a separate observation, so do not merge every brown feature into one diagnosis.
Your next useful check
Photograph one frond underside in focus, then check the growing mix. Record whether dots are arranged in a regular pattern and whether any insects are actually visible. Leave the cause uncertain until you can compare it properly.
If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.
Make a care routine with Plont
Give your fern its own next check date in Plont. Its needs differ from a snake plant's, so record the moisture decision for this pot rather than using one household watering timetable.
Start with Plont. It works in your browser and is free to start. Using the app requires an account and usage limits apply. Photo identification is a suggestion to verify; it does not establish a diagnosis.
Care reference
The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Boston fern profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
