Plant covered: Epipremnum aureum.
Golden pothos is often sold as money plant, but that common name also belongs to unrelated plants. Check the label for Epipremnum aureum before borrowing someone else's care routine. Its trailing stems make a useful first lesson in watching new growth rather than counting watering days.
Choose a bright place for the next leaf
Bright, indirect light is a good starting point. Pothos tolerates dimmer positions, but surviving a dark corner does not make that corner ideal. Keep a photo of the growing tip and compare the next few leaves. If you move the pot, record the change so you can connect later growth with its position.
Let the potting mix dry between waterings
Use a draining container and let the mix dry between drinks. Check below the surface rather than watering because the top looks pale. After watering, let excess escape. A decorative cover should conceal the growing pot, not keep its base submerged.
Decide what to do with bare vines
Older vines can lose leaves and concentrate growth near their tips. Pruning can encourage a fuller shape; a support offers another way to grow a long vine. Decide whether you want a trailing basket or a climbing plant before repeatedly cutting it back. Inspect the remaining foliage while you work.
Your next useful check
Photograph one growing tip, note whether the mix is wet or dry, and record whether the vine is trailing or supported. That gives your next observation a clear comparison.
If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.
Make a care routine with Plont
In Plont, begin by browsing for pothos or comparing a suggested photo identification with the label. Use its watered, still moist or unsure choices to record the check and select your next date.
Start with Plont. It works in your browser and is free to start. Using the app requires an account and usage limits apply. Photo identification is a suggestion to verify; it does not establish a diagnosis.
Care reference
The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Golden pothos profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
