Hoya carnosa care: airy roots and flower spurs worth keeping

Learn Hoya carnosa care, choose an airy draining mix and recognise why old flower spurs should not be pruned automatically.

Plant covered: Hoya carnosa.

A Hoya carnosa can be a trailing foliage plant long before it becomes a flowering one. Treat the leaves, stems and growing medium as the main care project rather than measuring success only in blooms. Keep the species name because the hoya genus includes plants with different growing habits.

Use bright, indirect light and a growth plan

Bright, indirect light suits Hoya carnosa. Decide whether you want its stems to trail or grow on support, then leave room for the next extension. Compare new leaves and stem growth over time. A longer stem is something to observe before you decide it needs to be cut off.

Give the roots an airy, draining medium

Hoya carnosa is an epiphyte and needs a loose, fast-draining mix. Allow it to dry between waterings and avoid leaving the pot in runoff. Both excessive wetness and dryness can contribute to leaf drop, so inspect the medium before interpreting a fallen leaf as a request for water.

Keep useful flower spurs

Hoya can flower again from an existing peduncle, the small spur that carried a flower cluster. Do not automatically trim it off when the flowers fade. If you are unsure which stem is which, photograph it and compare with a reference. Repot for a reason rather than trying to force blooms through repeated root disturbance.

Your next useful check

Photograph a growing stem and any old flower spur before pruning. Record the moisture result separately. This creates a useful reference for the next check without changing the plant just to make the pot look tidier.

If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.

The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Wax plant profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
