Jade plant care: bright light and a dry-pot watering decision

Care for Crassula ovata with bright light, drainage and checks that put the pot's condition ahead of a fixed watering calendar.

Plant covered: Crassula ovata.

A jade plant's tree-like outline develops slowly. A small cutting and an older branching specimen may look very different, but both need a care routine that respects their succulent growth. Confirm Crassula ovata on the label before applying this guide to another plant sold as jade.

Choose a genuinely bright position

Jade needs bright light and can take a sunny indoor position with protection from intense afternoon exposure. Observe what reaches the plant across the day. A room described as sunny may still leave the pot shaded behind a curtain or several metres away from the window.

Wait for a dry growing medium

Use well-drained mix and water when it is dry, rather than keeping it continuously moist. Let excess water drain. A heavy decorative pot can make it difficult to judge the growing container, so check inside it. Reduce intervention when growth slows and the mix takes longer to dry.

Read leaf changes alongside the root conditions

Leaf fall can accompany excessive watering, and a wet mix makes that possibility worth investigating. Do not diagnose from one loose leaf alone. Record which part of the plant changed, whether the stems are firm and what you found in the pot before deciding on pruning or a new container.

Your next useful check

Take a side view showing branch shape and a closer photo of the newest leaves. Record whether the medium is dry throughout the area you can assess. That baseline helps you notice a change without repeatedly handling the plant.

If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.

Make a care routine with Plont

Use Plont to remember to check, rather than to repeat an automatic weekly pour. Record watered, still moist or unsure, then choose the date of your next observation based on this jade's pot.

Care reference

The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Jade plant profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
