Monstera deliciosa care: support, light and a better watering check

Care for Monstera deliciosa with indirect light, sensible watering and sturdy support, and keep track of changes with Plont.

Plant covered: Monstera deliciosa.

A monstera needs room for its next leaf, not just space for the leaves it already has. Before buying a larger pot or moving it into a darker corner, look at how the stem is supported and where the light reaches it. This guide is for Monstera deliciosa, not every plant sold as Swiss cheese plant.

Plan around its climbing habit

Provide a sturdy support as the plant grows. Arrange it around the main stem without squeezing the leaf stalks. Decide where future growth can go before placing it in a narrow walkway. Photograph the stem and support together so you can notice when the arrangement stops holding the plant comfortably.

Check partway into the mix

Give it bright, indirect light and a well-drained growing medium. NC State recommends letting roughly the upper quarter to third of the medium dry between thorough waterings. In a deep container, a surface touch alone cannot tell you that. Always let excess water leave the growing pot.

Use a new leaf as a record, not a deadline

Leaf appearance is worth documenting, but do not set a deadline for a particular number of splits. Note whether the plant moved, whether the mix stayed damp, and which leaf changed. Wipe dust gently from established leaves and inspect both surfaces before interpreting a spot from a distant photograph.

Your next useful check

Record the position of one new leaf, the depth at which the mix feels dry, and whether the support needs adjusting. Avoid changing pot, position and feeding on the same day without a clear reason.

If you need another pair of eyes, gather a whole-plant photo, a close-up and recent care dates with our plant observation checklist. Leave anything you do not know marked unknown.

Make a care routine with Plont

Add the monstera to Plont and use each reminder to inspect the plant first. Record watered, still moist or unsure, then set the next check based on what you found.

Care reference

The species-specific growing guidance draws on NC State Extension’s Monstera profile, consulted 4 November 2026. The check prompts are Plont’s practical suggestions, not a fixed watering prescription. Cultivar, container and growing conditions can change what your plant needs.
